Recent events in the news remind me of this song. There are several roads to take with this prompt - a scandal you were involved in, witnessed, or how certain scandals in the news have affected you. Or maybe they didn't at all.

So that slice of scandalous life of yours - was it bitter, or delectable?

Slice of Life #68: Beautiful YOU

Time to sit straight in your chair and tell us all about what makes YOU so wonderful. Cast aside those silly notions that it's wrong to toot your own horn. How are generations later going to know about your terrific-ness if you never tell them?

What are your best features? Your eyes? Your legs? Your hair?

What makes you stand out in a crowd? Is your laugh contagious, your smile warm, or your hugs sincere? Your ability to quiet a child in a grocery cart?

What tastes do you have? Is it your taste in music, your love of art, or picking good books to read?

What talents have you acquired (or would like to)? Cooking? Running a business? Home decor?

Each person is not only unique, they're also a genius in their own way. Time to shine folks - let's hear about beautiful YOU. In this prompt, you may only write about the GOODNESS that you are. :)

Slice of Life #62: Howdy Neighbor!

I just talked to a man today who was in Japan when the Tsunami hit. He was explaining how living quarters are experienced there - quite different than rural Idaho!! He shared with me how the culture of "don't do anything that might inconvenience your neighbor" is deeply ingrained at an early age. Here it seems the thought is, "Don't tick me off, and we might get along."

And that got me thinking how we all have neighbor stories. The sweet elderly lady next door or the grumpy old codger. The wars over water rights, the couple that the police frequented, the kind neighbor that brought soup over when she found out you were sick, etc. There are as many neighbors as there are people. Pick a neighbor to highlight in your slice of life stories. OR if you want to get really personal, you might even attempt to write about the kind of neighbor you ARE, or the kind of neighbor you ASPIRE to be.

My Grandmother and Ma-maw.

I couldn't think of a better title for this prompt. Sometimes when thinking about prompts to write about, I'll sift through old photos for ideas. This picture reminded me of going up to see Ma-maw when I was little at Christmastime. I'll wait until I write my own slice of life to give details, but I started thinking how my kids are not going to know her unless I make sure I write it down. I have told them the stories, but if you asked them which Great Grandmother gave me chocolates every time I came to visit and which one greeted me with a big hug and said, "Oh, this is Aine!" - I don't think they could tell you.

So the prompt this week is simple, and it's for family history as well as personal histories. This week I want you to be the bridge between the years. Pick a holiday (can be any holiday) and tell those youngsters what it was like to know Great Grandma and Grandpa that year. Or Uncle and Aunt. Whoever, so long as they're family, and they've passed on - preferably someone the younger generation never met. Although, that's pretty loose because my kids met some of their Great Grandparents but they don't remember them. So use your own judgment on that - you've got the idea. I hope this is a pleasant experience and not a hard one.

Anyone else remember the Betsy Clark stuff?

This week, let's hear about a friend. New friends, old friends, best friends, friends gone wrong. We all have friends.... pick one and share a story about them. No fair choosing a family member - we'll get to them later. :D

For family history - I don't know about you, but our family tree is peppered with "adopted" family members - friends that have become family. It would be good to document these friendships so that somewhere down the line "Uncle Bob" doesn't get tied to the family tree by mistake. Although, I'm sure he wouldn't mind! ;)

During the summertime you hear about folks going to this reunion or that one. School reunions, family reunions... long time friends and family who haven't seen each other in years finally getting together over the summer break. Let's hear about yours.... or your ancestors. They had reunions too. Maybe you'll want to write about the reunion after being away at war, or two sisters finally speaking after years of self imposed not speaking.

Perhaps you won't want to talk about yourself or family at all, but witnessing a reunion might have changed you in ways you never would have dreamed.

Slice of Life #2 - HEROES

It's Memorial Day weekend here in the states. Since we aren't all in the same country, I thought I'd open this prompt up to something a little wider. Write about a hero that has in some way touched your life.

Ideas for shaking loose the memories:

It could be someone you admire, and strive to emulate. How about recalling that terrible day the fire and policemen on 9-11 lost their lives in the line of duty? I know a man who got a letter from Fred MacMurray and it changed his life forever - Fred became his hero. Do you have a friend or family member that died in the armed forces and you'd like to share about?

For the family histories, maybe there's a particular ancestor that has become your hero as you've gotten to know them. Or you learned of a story where a heroic act of service was rendered during the 1930's depression. Need to record that WWI story you've been meaning to get to?

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Folks become our heroes for different reasons. We're sure looking forward to seeing who YOUR heroes are this week! Oh - and don't forget to come back and link to Mr. Linky!!
