Slice of Life #58: Chocolate

from pintrest.com

Last night at 10:00pm my husband rolled in the last of the of our stuff from the old house. So we are now officially moved. However, we still have to unpack, a process that brings to mind the benefits of having something chocolate around the house. :)

So this week, let's write about the chocolate we've consumed over the years. Did it help you get through a tough time? I know a woman who ate three pieces of Godiva chocolate once a week to help her stay on her diet the rest of the time. Is it your favourite flavor of ice cream? I would have been lost this week without my Triple Chocolate Cake ice cream! Did you have strawberries and chocolate at your wedding? Have you ever shared you last bite of chocolate cake with someone else? And on and on we could go. (Reminder: If you have a recipe you love, that's good to record for future generations too!)

This week should be extra yummy to write about!

Slice of Life #51: How does YOUR garden grow?

1978 - Foss Lake, Oklahoma
Tending my Grandma's garden.
Loved the green onions. :)

This week, let's talk gardens. Vegetable gardens. Flower gardens. Weed gardens.

Wait - there's no such thing as a weed garden? Really? 'Cause we've mastered that in the patch of ground next to us for the past three years! :D

Joking aside, this isn't as hard as it sounds. You could write about planting a garden with your family growing up, or the hardships of growing one as an adult. Maybe you've never kept anything alive that you've planted! A trip to enjoy a community flower garden, like the Azelea Trail in Houston, Texas would be a great entry in your personal history. Did anyone in your family mistake a hose for a snake? How about watching the hail beat your tomato plants to the ground?

Yes, I'm even thinking of Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant in Music & Lyrics when she keeps drowning all his plants. If that's the only exposure you've ever had with gardening, write it.

See ya next week!

Slice of Life #45: From Scratch

Thanks for the stories, ya'll.

Mine will be up tomorrow. I tried to
get it done, but I'm doing good getting this
out.

This week, I want you to think back to the days before convenience foods. Maybe you have a tradition where you still make certain dinner's with Grandma's recipes. Did you ever sit on the ice cream bucket while your uncle cranked the handle? Did you make butter in a mason jar or watch Grandma churn the cream? How about the special way Mom shaped the pie crusts? Ever go to a bakery and watch them knead the breads? Or attend a cooking class? That counts too.

There is an art to making food from scratch - an art that many of us don't indulge in any longer. Close your eyes and remember those special times when art was a memory.

Now go write it down. :)

PS Recipes ARE welcome!

Slice of Life #30: Kitchen Disasters!

Thanks to everyone who shared last week!
I just got back in town, so I'm behind -
mine will be up tomorrow.

Remember this scene in Christmas Vacation?

Christmas Vacation is one of our (my husband and I) favorite holiday movies, simply because we relate to it on so many crazy levels. One of the best scenes is Clark Griswald digging into a gorgeous turkey, and it explodes. I have SO been there.

In fact, I know we all have. No matter how good we are in the kitchen, we all have those fabulous stories of good food gone bad under our tutelage. So let's hear about the apple butter that had a smoky flavor, or the burnt gingerbread people left out on the porch to greet the guests. Or the time you made a cake out of wheat flour that was so hefty, calling it a brick is too nice. If you have pictures.... oh my goodness, how awesome would that be!

Remember: disaster + time = a good laugh. Have some fun this week - share your not-so-shining moments in the kitchen!

Slice #3 - "BERRIES"

Thank you for your entries last week!

I don't know about you, but when I step into the supermarket lately, I'm overrun with the amounts of berries for sale. Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, marionberries, boysenberries... and down South, my mother's been picking dew berries on the side of the road. So I thought, why not? We've all been touched by the berry! Thus we have this week's prompt - berries!!!

Some thoughts to get your memory cages rattling:

Maybe you have a funny story about a child stealing strawberries from the neighbor's strawberry patch (I wouldn't know anything about that). Have a harrowing story about someone being allergic to them? Did you grow up next to a strawberry field? Ever go huckleberry hunting in the mountains, or visit a pick your own farm?

Some non food thoughts are: Writing about the Strawberry Shortcake nut in your house. Even if your story is about an Easter dress you made with little strawberries on it - anything goes, as long as it's about some form of berry!

For family history, maybe you've got a migrant strawberry picker in your family tree. Or how about sharing with us Great Grandma's famous berry cobbler recipe? Perhaps it was a slice of blueberry pie that won Great Grandpa's heart. I'd love to read about someone's Victorian hat that had berries on it. You know someone out there has a story about that! ;)

Can't wait to read these tasty stories! And don't forget to come back and link with Mr. Linky!
